AICRP on Utilization of Animal Energy
Mandate
To study
the status and scope of utilization of various draught animals in different
regions and develop mechanically efficient matching equipment to increase
versatility of draught animals as source of farm power and perform the job with
improved system efficiency in crop production and post harvest operations
without detrimental effect on the draught animals or the operators.
I.
To develop standard techniques and instrumentation for precise
measurement of animal draft power under field and laboratory condition.
II.
To survey status of draught animals and their utilization in
relation to production agriculture and post harvest requirements and
identification of unit operations having potential animal use and animal
equipment system components needing improvement.
III.
To determine the characteristics co-efficient of
animal-equipment-terrain system.
IV.
To design, develop and evaluate yoking and harnessing systems for
different draught animals used in singles, pairs and team.
V.
To optimize animal-machine system for agricultural operations.
VI.
To design, develop and evaluate animal transport system for
different regions.
VII.
To develop and evaluate animal draft application system for
operations like inter-culture, chemical application , harvesting, auxiliary
engine assisted operations like rotary tilling and development of efficient
mechanical systems for conversion and use of animal power for high speed rotary
power applications like water lifting, threshing, winnowing etc
VII.
Operational
research on improved utilization of animal draft power.
For more efficient utilization of
available DAP (63.9 M) especially in high density DAP states the continuance of
the project is being proposed for XI plan period with the following thrust
areas;
·
Front Line Demonstrations (FLD) of improved animal drawn
equipment/gadgets for increased and efficient utilization of Draught Animal
Power including transport.
·
Village Saturation Programme (VSP) with improved implement to
develop/demonstrate models for promotion of efficient utilization of DAP.
·
Adoption/Promotion of aninmal operated Zero till drill and raised
bed planting equipment and technology with conservation approach.
·
Adoption/development of package of equipment and technology for
vegetable cultivation.
·
Adoption and promotion of animal operated equipment and technology
for hill agriculture.
·
Adoption and promotion of improved rotary mode applications of
draught animals for post harvest operation, water lifting and electricity
generation.
·
Adoption and promotion of animal drawn tool carrier/frame with
matching implements for energy efficient and cost effective field operations.
·
Complementary use of draught animals with tractor/mechanical power
systems for interculture spraying and other field operations in wide spaced and
tall crops.
·
Prototype production and commercialization of improved animal drawn
equipment by involving local manufacturers/artisans and training of farmers.
·
Socio-economic studies of animal farming system and efficient
management of draught animals keeping in view the safety and health of animals.

The project has been making valuable scientific contributions
through R&D for increased and enhanced utilization of draught animal power.
The R&D efforts have bridged the information gap. Instrumentation has been
developed for R&D studies to generate reliable and reproduceable results.
The technologies developed in the project are low cost, simple and cost
effective. It provides options for strategic intervention to get 30-40% more
output from the existing draught animal population. The yoke and harnesses,
draftability results and work-rest-cycle studies provide animal and farmer
friendly use of animals for increased output. The development of matching
implements for different types and breeds of draught animals is another
milestone of the project. The ORP activities have benefitted small and marginal
farmers in different regions for their first hand exposure to new technologies.
